Mayor Lordon recaps council involvement at municipalities conference in Ottawa

  • Jun 04, 2025
Mayor Lordon and three councillors attended the 2025 Federation of Canadian Municipalities in Ottawa last weekend.  The Mayor provides an update from the event:

It has been a busy, informative, and inspiring few days in Ottawa at the annual conference of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Over 2000 Mayors and Councillors from communities big and small across Canada have been gathered to take part in workshops and tours, hear from federal party representatives, and develop policy to advocate for federal support and progress on municipal issues such as infrastructure funding, housing and homelessness, public safety and crime, and public transit. I've been here with Deputy Mayor Paddy Quinn, Councillor Veronique Arsenault, and Councillor Chad Duplessie.
While here I took part in several interesting and helpful sessions including:

- A few focused on infrastructure planning (which is Miramichi's biggest area of responsibility and funding need) including learning about new funding opportunities and some tips on structuring RFPs and tenders to get best value

- A session on the rise in the spread of misinformation, the importance of proactive and transparent communication, and tips for helping minimize its impact

- The Atlantic Regional Caucus meeting with leaders from around Atlantic Canada

- A session on the need for federal bail reforms (FCM supports bail reform with stronger sentences for repeat offenders)

- I moderated a "Results over Red Tape" session with efficiency tips for local governments. Some really great information here on group procurement, asset management, and the emerging use of AI to give better customer service on everything from building permits, to snow removal, to recreation programs. I'm looking forward to bringing this conversation forward to look into this for Miramichi when we get home.

- Heard keynote addresses from Prime Minister Mark Carney, Conservative Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman, NDP MP Gord Johns, and Green Leader Elizabeth May

I've been one of New Brunswick's three reps on our FCM national Board of Governors for the past 8 years (representing NB's cities), it's been an incredible learning experience and a chance to bring Miramichi's voice to national stage on the big national municipal issues, however today I am passing the torch to Mayor Kate Rogers of Fredericton who will take over. Best of luck to Mayor Kate and NB's other representatives! And I will certainly continue to stay involved and always advocating for Miramichi!
