Chatham’s outdoor rink, located on Howard Street, will be officially renamed the “Wayne MacDonald Outdoor Rink.”

The new plaque will be unveiled on Thursday, April 23, at 2 p.m.

We invite you to join City Council members, as well as Wayne’s family and friends, at the outdoor rink to pay tribute to his dedication to managing this facility for the benefit of the community.

Background

Wayne Blackie MacDonald volunteered at the rink for over 20 years, removing snow, flooding the ice, painting the boards in summer, making sure it was in the best shape possible for the kids in the community.

He worked with staff at nearby Ian Baillie to organize field trips for skating at the rink, giving kids an opportunity to experience something that was very unique for some of them.

He kept an eye on the children who used the rink and worked hard to give them something to do rather than getting in trouble, and he was always happy to do it. His efforts did not go unnoticed, in 2009 he received the Volunteer of the Month recognition from CTV News, which meant a lot to MacDonald and his family.

Council said that naming the rink after MacDonald was an excellent idea and would be a lasting and deserving tribute.
