On February 20th the Miramichi Sports Wall of Fame had their induction ceremonies at JMH. After a year hiatus and changes to the board the organization that honours athletes builders in pioneers in Miramichi's sporting history the organization put together a memorable event with very deserving inductees.
THE INDUCTEES
Lynn Carney - Builder
Carney was an organizer of the earliest girls league hockey in the region. She is a life-long athlete and dedicated educator and was instrumental in the formation of the Greater Miramichi Female Hockey Association, which is thriving today with more than 130 girls enjoying the sport.
Jim Watters - Builder
Jim was inducted as a builder for his visionary work in basketball. Jim says he wasn't a great athlete himself, but appreciated the opportunity to play and paid it back when he became a teacher by coaching basketball teams and being a builder of the development programs enjoyed by hundreds of players today. In 2019 he coached MVHS, a group of boys he coached since elementary school, to the first AAA basketball title in school history, shocking the NB basketball community.
2019 Chatham Ironmen - Team
The 2019 Ironmen did not win the league that year, but their gutsy team went 6-0 with some nail biting games to win the National Championship that year, hosted in Miramichi.
Frank McKenzie - Athlete
McKenzie's name is synonymous with stock car racing in Miramichi and in New Brunswick. When he wasn't racing and winning, he was helping others prepare their cars. Frank had a 32 year career in racing beginning in 1964. Frank is the first of likely more in this sport to be inducted into the Wall of Fame. He continues to be active int he community and volunteers his time to maintain an outdoor rink in Douglasfield.
Evelyn Rosamond Crocker - Pioneer
Crocker was a groundbreaking figure in women's sport in Miramichi. She got a Phys ed degree in 1940 and helped establish the first Atlantic women's university basketball league. She served in the RCAF during the Second World War and upon her return to Miramichi remained deeply committed to community service.
Fred Ross - Builder
Fred Ross dedicated his life to organizing and coaching minor hockey and was a coach and mentor to hundreds of boys over the years. In 1990 he received the Esson Trophy for outstanding work in minor hockey and baseball.
Paula Richard - Athlete
Richard had a 20 year career in softball and is a 3-time Canadian Champion, 12 time eastern Canadian Champion and winner of 20 provincial tournaments. She pitched a no-hitter in a provincial championship against the Saint John Experts
