The Chatham Head Tigers are the champs of the 2013 MVBL season.  They defeated the Newcastle Cardinals 3 games to 1 in the best of 5 final with an 8-6 win in Chatham Head on Monday night.

The Tigers scored runs in bunches int he 2nd and 4th innings and built an 8-1 lead after the fifth.  But Cardinal bats came alive in the 6th and put up 5 runs closing the gap and making a thrilling 7th inning.  

Cardinals got men on base  and and were threatening with runners at the corners and 1 out.  But Tiger relief pitcher Sonny Newman was firing strikes and kept the ball in the infield which kept the Cardinal runners from scoring. 

The story of the series was depth.  Tigers bats were effective throughout the line-up, while the Cardinals relied on the to of the batting order to do the damage.  Tigers also seemed to have better pitching.

The tigers will play in the provincials that start this week in Tracadie.

Miramichi fans really liked the series and the season in general.  Let's hope both teams can field teams again next year.

The 50/50 at the final game was $1400 won by Larry Flanagan
