Scavenger Hunt cancelled because of possible man with machete

Beauber Island Interpretive Centre had to reschedule a Scavenger Hunt last weekend because of the possibility of a man with a weapon on the island. The following information was posted on their Facebook page but has been removed at the direction of Parks Canada.

The Board of Directors and staff share the following information:

As of late, we have been having many issues with some boaters and people on the island that are causing safety issues.

Today we had to cancel ferry services due to a man being seen on Beaubears Island at approx 10:45 am with a machete (which was described by the visitors and boat captain) acting unpredictable and odd such as running around in the bushes, waving a machete in the air by the water, picking items off the beach and throwing them back down instantly just to name some of the things this guy was doing..

RCMP was called and they located the guy who at the time was deemed "fine" with no knife or machete visible Once the RCMP left, the guy hid his canoe in the forest, then came out from the edge of forest with what looks to be a machete approx 40 minutes later waving it around. Parks Canada was notified as well. This guy was still seen at approx 4 pm.

Due to the fact we are unsure if this guy is hiding on the island, and the safety of staff and visitors, we must reschedule our Scavenger Hunt until Saturday, August 12.

Anyone going to the island on their own, please be careful.

On August 7, the interpretive centre will now be closed to give staff a well deserved extra day off.

A person was removed from the island yesterday with the help from Captain Reg, Kevin, Patti, Ken, RCMP officers and Parks Canada Wardens. Thank you everyone.

We have also learned from the community there are squatters on the island. The guy removed would be considered one of them.

No matter where, everyone should be mindful of their surroundings, the island is no different.
