MIRAMICHI (GNB) – A shelter for unhoused people in Miramichi has opened its doors.

“We remain committed to ensuring anyone who needs a safe, warm space to sleep has one every day of the year, but especially now as the winter weather sets in,” said Social Development Minister Cindy Miles. “Each community across our province has unique needs, and that is why working together across all levels of government, and in the community, is imperative.”

The new centre at 273 King George Highway is operated by Miramichi Housing Solutions. It offers sleeping accommodations for up to 20 people, personal hygiene facilities and places to recharge electronics, as well as hot refreshments, snacks and light breakfast.

The shelter is open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. seven days a week, and will open 24 hours a day when the weather is deemed extreme.

“We are so pleased to see a place for our residents to stay when they need it,” said Miramichi Mayor Adam Lordon. “I want to thank the provincial government for their continued support, as well as the hard work and dedication of Miramichi Housing Solutions for putting services in place for the most vulnerable in our community.”

As spring approaches, the space will be evaluated for future use as a long-term shelter integrated with prevention and diversion services. The provincial and municipal governments will examine options for longer-term supportive housing and a possible expansion on the shelter’s property.

Miles said the provincial government remains committed to working with municipalities and service providers across the province to help people experiencing homelessness.

Anyone facing homelessness can get information on services by calling 211.
