In March 2024 the Province of New Brunswick applied for rezoning on General Manson Way and on the sourth end of Henderson Street for two residential developments by NB Housing. Great progress is being made on both projects and they will soon be seeing residents moving in. There are 10 units for seniors and 12 units for families.
The City of Miramichi designated these lands as surplus and ffered them to developers and the Province expressed interest and soon after the proper zoning was realized.
These are the first new public housing units in Miramichi in 30 years and the Minister said more than 500 individuals or families are waiting for affordable housing and upwards of 100 people are living rough in the Miramichi region.
Last year he auditor general reported 13,129 households were on the subsidized housing waiting list in new Brunswick at the end of 2024. Of those, 3,601 were listed as senior, 4,173 as family and 5,355 as non-elderly.
The province had the official announcement of the project yesterday and it was attended by Mayor Lordon and Housing Minister David Hickey. (Photos: Mayor Lordon's Facebook page)

the GNB press release:
MIRAMICHI (GNB) – The opening of three new public housing developments in Miramichi will improve access to affordable housing in the region.
A duplex on Warren Avenue is already home to two families, while a 10-unit seniors complex on General Manson Way and a 10-unit family complex on Henderson Street will soon be completed.
“These 22 new living spaces will provide new affordable housing options for the region,” said David Hickey, the minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “We know that people need access to safe places to live, and that’s why we’re pleased to be opening fresh new public housing units like these.”
There are now 3,873 public housing units: 2,111 family units, 1,686 senior units and 76 units for non-elderly singles.
The corporation also oversees 776 rural and Indigenous housing units across the province.
“We know that public housing units help to house so many New Brunswickers in need across the province, and we’re pleased to be adding these new spaces to the mix,” said Hickey. “We’re also working to manage, maintain, repair and refresh our existing stock across the province.”
The New Brunswick Housing Corporation has a variety of housing programs for renters and property owners to help address the government’s affordability and housing commitments.
Work is underway on 137 additional public housing units at 14 sites across the province.
