It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Jean (Jeannie) Butler, beloved wife of Fred Butler, of Chaplin Island Road, Miramichi, which occurred at Percy’s Place Hospice, on November 5, 2025. Jeannie was born in Newcastle on June 4, 1958, the youngest daughter of Josephine (Josie) and the late Hedley Black.
Jeannie, or “Mrs. Butler” to her students, was an exceptional Elementary school teacher in the former School District 8 and in District 16. Teaching was her true calling. She loved her students, and her patience and understanding helped prepare so many little ones to move on with confidence through future grades. Jeannie taught at various levels in the Elementary school system, but she spent the majority of her career at the Kindergarten and Grade One levels. She retired from Harkins Elementary School in 2011.
In addition to her husband, Fred, and her mother, Josephine (Josie) Black, Jeannie is survived by her two loving sons, Aaron and Brandon, as well as by her precious granddaughters, Mya and Makayla, and their mother, Lyla Meng. She is also survived by four sisters, Gloria Duffy (late Joe), Lois Wilson (John), Gail (Lou Walsh), and Heather, and five brothers, Hedley, Jr. (Buddy) (Arlene), John (Vanda), Paul, Kevin (Wanda), and David, by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as her in-laws, Rachel, Elizabeth, Gordon (Sandra), and Raymond Butler. In addition to her father, Jeannie was predeceased by her sister Lillian.
A very special thank you to Dr. Gerard Losier and the wonderful staff of Percy’s Place, for the compassionate care provided to Jeannie and her family members. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Sean Losier and the staff of 4West Miramichi Regional Hospital.
We want to especially thank Wendy Baldwin, who was a supportive best friend of Jeannie for spending countless hours with Jeannie at the hospital and hospice, as well as Jeannie’s sisters, Heather and Gail, for their devoted care of Jeannie during her illness.
The family will receive visitors at Jardine Funeral Home on Monday, November 10, 2025, from 11 AM-1 PM followed immediately by a Celebration of Life at Jardine Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Perry Cooper officiating.
