In an unexpected and heartfelt gesture, Dr. Gerard Losier has donated $350,000 for the naming rights of the lobby and reception area at the Arbec Wellness Centre. The surprise announcement was made to his wife, Judy Losier, during a celebration at City Hall on Friday, June 27th, 2025, coinciding with her 64th birthday.
Mayor Adam Lordon announced that the lobby and reception area will bear Judy Losier’s name, officially designated as The Judy Losier Lobby and Reception Area, for the duration of the centre’s existence.
Judy was joined by her sisters, Colleen Power and Jennifer Walker, under the impression they were attending a simple birthday gathering with Lordon to share a cake.
“This is an incredible gift. Everyone here today is so special to me. I feel loved. It’s a privilege. What better way to celebrate my birthday than with friends, family, and the mayor making this the most memorable one ever?” Judy reportedly said.
The announcement was attended by several city officials and community members, including councillors Jason Harris and Ryan Somers, Deputy Mayor Paddy Quinn, Councillors Peggy Doyle and Veronique Arsenault, as well as Judy’s sisters and Mayor Lordon. (Photo credit: Northumberland Free Press)
In his remarks, Mayor Lordon highlighted Judy Losier’s decades of dedicated community service.
The Mayor added that naming the reception area is a perfect fit as Judy is a natural convener of people — the queen of social gatherings — and for the next 50 to 60 years, many will come together in the reception area.
This generous donation follows a week of significant contributions to the centre’s fundraising efforts. Earlier, Frank and Julie McKenna donated $1 million for the aquatic centre, which will be named the McKenna Aquatic Centre. Other donors include Arbec, contributing $4 million for the building’s naming rights; the Campton Christie Foundation Inc., donating $300,000 for the leisure and competition pools; and Deborah Lyons, honorary chair of the fundraising campaign, who contributed $250,000 for the gymnasium.
The City of Miramichi launched a fundraising campaign in 2024, aiming to raise $5 million for the multiplex project. Due to these substantial donations, the goal was increased.
Individuals interested in contributing to the campaign can contact Sandra Gauger at the City of Miramichi.
