It is with great sadness that we, the family of Lawrence (Larry) Hachey of Chatham Head, NB, announce his peaceful passing on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at the age of 72. Larry was born November 28, 1951, in Nelson, NB to the late Amédie and Catherine (Benoit) Hachey.
Like many children of large families Larry quit school and went to work for Burchill’s farm at the age of 12. He was then employed at Acadia Sawmill where he had a horrific accident almost severing his right arm at the age of 16. After a year’s recovery he returned to work there. In 1971 he started at the Plywood Plant in Nelson. He held several positions at the mill as there wasn’t anything that Larry couldn’t master. In 1991, when the mill burnt down, Larry did several jobs including working on the trail at the hydro plant in Bushville, Surveyor’s helper at the building site for the Miramichi Regional Hospital, school bus driver and at Arnold Roach’s Asphalt Plant.
Larry was a family man with the kindest heart. He and Merina always tried to help others even when times were tough at home. He was heavily involved with his church, as a eucharist minister, usher and you could always find him volunteering to help out at the church. He was also involved with Marriage Encounter, Knights of Columbus Father Michael Egan Council 8381 and the Cursillo Movement. One of his proudest moments was when he became a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus.
Larry loved to tease and torment. Many hours were spent around the table retelling and laughing about all the adventures in childhood and with friends. He loved a good game of cards, going for a Sunday drive (even if it wasn’t Sunday) and having a bonfire in the back yard roasting “spider” wieners and marshmallows.
Survived by his wife Merina (Richard) of 52 years; children François (Sandra), Saint John, NB; Jason, Toronto, ON; Angeline (Eric) Couture, Shediac, NB; brothers Ernest, Leon (Lori) and Stephen (Loretta). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
