Irene Anne Blakely
September 19, 1952 – June 20, 2025
“Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her faith a guiding light. She is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.”
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, Irene Anne Blakely, beloved wife of Gordon Edward Blakely (Jr.) of Millbank, who passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on June 20, 2025, at the age of 72.
Born on September 19, 1952, Irene was the cherished daughter of the late Daniel and Eileen Lyons (Harrigan) of Ferry Road.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years, Gordon, and her five loving daughters: Helena (Rob) Doucette of Lower Newcastle, Stephanie (Anthony) Gosse of Grande Prairie, Alberta, Eileen (Brian) Anderson of Millbank, Erin Blakely of Grande Prairie, Alberta, and Emily Blakely of St. John's, Newfoundland. Also left to mourn are her honorary daughter, Sara Oh of New York, NY, and her daughter-in-law, Darci Blakely of Douglastown.
She was lovingly known as "Nana" to her 11 grandchildren: Mirinda, Alexander, Rebecca, Matthew, and Haley Rose Doucette of Lower Newcastle; Logan and Catherine Gosse of Grande Prairie, Alberta; Wesley Blakely of Douglastown; Anna and Everlee Anderson of Millbank; and Taylor Friesen of Grande Prairie, Alberta.
Irene is also survived by her brother, Gerald (Shirley) Lyons of Ferry Road. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Daniel Blakely, and her brother, Patrick (Cindy) Lyons.
At the center of Irene's life were her faith, her family, and her friends. She possessed extraordinary strength, endless compassion, and a warmth that welcomed everyone into her home. Irene found joy in learning, teaching, and sharing her faith, and she celebrated the successes of others with genuine pride. Her love extended not only to her children and grandchildren, but also to her nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. In her presence, you always felt deeply loved.
Irene dedicated 34 years to a distinguished career in education, beginning in 1975 at Miramichi Rural School and later teaching at Napan Elementary and Gretna Green. She was more than a teacher-she was a mentor, leader, and champion for every child she taught. Her unwavering commitment to her students extended far beyond the classroom, as she organized school trips, coached teams, led clubs, and developed programs that enriched countless young lives. Known for her honesty, wisdom, and deep compassion, Irene lived her teaching philosophy: "Never settle for less than your best." Her colleagues, students, and community were profoundly blessed by her gifts.
One of the greatest joys of her life was her marriage to Gordon, her true soulmate. Their 51-year partnership was rooted in faith, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Together, they created a home full of warmth, generosity, and kindness, and their love continues to inspire all who knew them.
Irene's joy for life radiated through her devotion to the church, her community involvement, and her vibrant social life. She was a gracious host who loved a good gathering-especially during the Irish Festival-and her positivity was contagious. Many sought her gentle wisdom over a comforting cup of tea, and she always made time to listen.
Though her life was shorter than we wished, due to a long and courageous battle with cancer, her legacy of love, faith, and strength will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
