Ironmen swamp Tigers in 10-0 drubbing
For the first time in 33 years the Chatham Ironmen and the Chatham head Tigers faced off in league play tonight at Ironmen Field. From 1985 to 1988 the Chatham Ironmen did not participate in the NB Senior League but fielded a team in the Miramichi Valley Baseball League. Last year the Ironmen did not operate at all, and this year they joined the Miramichi Valley Baseball League and will join cross-town rivals Newcastle Cardinals and Chatham Head Tigers.
The Ironmen are 3-0 to start the season and have yet to give up a run, including tonight's 10-0 drubbing of the Tigers.
Starting pitcher for the Tigers, Tyler King, got out of the first inning with no runs against partly because of a good play at second base by Devon MacKenzie. But in the second inning the Ironmen sent 11 batters to the plate and scored 8 runs. King couldn’t ( or wouldn’t) throw his fastball for strikes, and the Ironmen bats were timing his variable speed breaking ball with consistency.
Ryan Flynn took over on the mound for the Tigers with two outs in the second and gave up two runs in relief. The game ended when DH Nick Leggett had an RBI single to score the tenth run, ending the game in the bottom of the 5th inning.
Zach Newman pitched a 4 hit shutout for the Ironmen.
The Ironmen face the Cardinals at 7:30 on Tuesday June 29th at Memorial Field while on the same night the Tigers take on the Caraquet Acadians at the Waldo Henderson Field in Chatham Head.
