Emma Connick honoured during opening ceremonies
The Miramichi Her-icanes played their 6th game last night and evened their record at 3 and 3 with a decisive win over the Moncton Mystic. The game was never in doubt as the home team Her-icanes came out of the gate fast in front of a large audience and built a 15 point lead in the first quarter as they dominated the boards and smothered moncton with their defence. Moncton appeared to be a little short-handed as they only had four subs, and the Her-icanes were able to utilize their full bench in the game without giving up their lead. The final score was 93-74.
Leading the way for the Her-icanes was point guard Lauren Rainford with 27 points while Devin Lawlor added 24 including 6 three-pointers. Despite being outmatched, the player of the game was Moncton’s Leonie Elbert who scored 44 points, and was on fire in the second and third quarters when she scored 26 points including 7 threes. The Hericanes play their next game on June 8th against Halifax who are currently undefeated.
Emma Connick honoured
During the opening ceremonies the Hericanes honoured a female basketball player from Miramichi. Emma Connick. The team plans to honour females from the Miramichi & North Shore region that have made significant contributions to Basketball in our area and who have left a lasting impact in our community.
Emma, who died in a tragic accident in April 2019 two months before her graduation along with three other Miramichi youths, was an outstanding young lady and basketball player from the River Hoops program, JMH Tommies & Team NB. She received a wonderful tribute at the beginning of the game that talked about her love of the sport and her many accomplishments as a player. She surely would have loved to participate in this women’s league. The Her-icanes presented her parents and brother with a plaque and a Her-icanes t-shirt with Emma’s name and number on it.
