Cement being poured marks the foundation of a new residential complex
For the past few weeks a big hole was being dug at 619 King George Highway, the former location of the convent in Newcastle. A local developer is putting a 31 unit apartment building there with many modern features. Construction got real today when the largest cement pumper in the Maritimes showed up and emptied the first cement truck in 5 minutes.
Brian Bowes of Probilt Industies Inc says the building will have four floors, underground parking and storage, elevators, and two units that will be barrier free. Each unit will have 9 foot ceiling, a balcony, and an efficient heat pumps.
There will be a mixture of 2 bedroom 2 bathroom units with and without dens, and several one bedroom units. There will be sprinkler systems for fire protection, and the windows will be 20% larger than standard size.
Bowes says he doesn't know what to expect as for as delays go related to Covid, which makes the completion date hard to estimate. Final costs and rent structures are also up in the air, so the units will not be put on the market until those numbers are more certain.
The City of Miramichi through its Downtown Housing Incentive Program provided a grant tot he project of $287,500.
