The intersection on Douglastown Blvd near the Walmart entrance, which causes so much confusion for people who don’t know how to merge, is going to get some help in the form of a roundabout. Mark Buckingham, the Director of Engineering for the City of Miramichi, made a presentation to City Council a few weeks ago that included a rendering of a new roundabout. Buckingham said it would be a shame if the multiplex opens and that road is not fixed, because they expect an additional 1,000 cars a day to be going through that intersection. Buckingham expressed confidence that Miramichi drivers could learn to use a double-lane roundabout.
He said he hopes the project will be a go in 2026, even though there is no funding that has been approved by the province. Buckingham said the province is on board with the idea and may decide to fund it at 75%, but the work would have to be coordinated with any bridge closure. The City would be responsible for 25% of the cost, plus any costs that are not eligible. Worst-case scenario, it would be done in 2027.
