It is with sadness that the family of Clayton Alexander MacTavish of Miramichi, announce his death at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on December 24, 2023, at the age of 97. He was born on March 26, 1926 in Sillikers, N.B. and was the son of the late Hubert and Dora (Murphy) MacTavish.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Jean Shirley (McCray) MacTavish; his son, H. Brent MacTavish; his sister, Mary (Vickers) Walker; and a niece, Linda (Vickers) Visser.
He is survived by his daughter, Judy McPhail (Robert) of Oromocto, NB; grandchildren, Jennifer McPhail (Jason Madore) and Matthew McPhail (Stephanie Hall); and 3 great grand children, Max Madore, and Jack and Beth McPhail.
Clayton was a member of Newcastle Baptist Church and served on several committees during his lifetime. Prior to his death, he was the oldest member of the church. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge, Highland Society of New Brunswick at Miramichi, and was a member of Miramichi Cemetery Committee. He worked at Repap (formerly known as Fraser’s Pulp and Paper Mill) for 40 years and retired from there in 1989.
Dad always kept abreast of the news and current events. He could recall details about times from many, many years ago. He and Mom travelled a lot in their younger years and he had a vivid memory for places and things they did and saw. He loved to tell stories about happenings from the past, especially regarding his dogs, friends and family.
Everyone who knew him will miss his smile, his engaging ways and his love of a “good talk.”
The family would like to thank Extra Mural Miramichi for their care and concern for Clayton over the past several years.
The funeral service will be held from Jardine Funeral Home Chapel, 597 Old King George Highway, Miramichi, NB on December 29, 2023, at 11 AM with Pastor Kevin Matthews officiating. A private family burial will be held at Miramichi Cemetery at a later date.
