UPDATE: Boil order in Newcastle still in place

Order lifted on Aril 14th

SEE UPDATE BELOW

Date: April 10, 2024

"A boil water advisory has been ordered by the Department of Health on the CITY OF Miramichi for the following location; Newcastle Water System.

During a boil water advisory it is important that all water destined for drinking, preparing infant formulas and juices, making ice cubes, washing fruits and vegetables, cooking and dental hygiene be held at a rolling boil for 1 minute.

Unless advised differently by the Department of Health, under most circumstances it is not necessary to boil water used for other household purposes. Adults, adolescents and older children may shower, bathe or wash using tap water but should avoid swallowing the water.

Toddlers and infants should be sponged bathed and caregivers need to ensure no water is drunk or swallowed. Dishes and laundry may be washed in tap water, either by hand or by machine, unless advised differently by a Department of Health representative.”

The advisory is due high turbidity in the water following a water main break.

Refer to our website or facebook page for a detailed map of the area affected.

For more information, please contact the Department of Public Works at 623-2020

UPDATE

The boil order is still in effect for the Newcastle Water System and will remain until there is two (2) clean water samples.

Please follow the instructions on the boil order advisory from the Department of Health.

Public Works staff has been working since early yesterday morning testing various points throughout the system for turbidity. In most areas the turbidity reading has been reached but there are still some locations outside the limits that requires more flushing time.

The flushing required is at low volumes and must be to be done slowly not to disturb the entire system.

Once the turbidity and chlorine levels are reached throughout the system, sampling can be carried out. Again, the system then requires two (2) clean samples.

The Public Works Department apologizes for the inconvenience. We want to assure affected residents and businesses that staff are working diligently to restore the water system back to normal.

APRIL 14

Boil order has been lifted in the Newcastle area.

The Newcastle water system was sampled Friday night and into Saturday and all results returned today April 14, 2024 at 2 p.m. as clear.

Department of Health has authorized the City of Miramichi to lift the order.

Residents in the affected area are asked to flush their lines (taps) for 3 to 5 minutes to ensure the water is turned over in the service line to the homes prior to consuming.

Public Works staff will still be doing some low volume flushing within the system for additional maintenance, and this will occur for the next week.

The Public Works Department apologizes for the inconvenience.
