Woman to shave head for IWK fundraiser

A Miramichi woman who is lucky to have her health, and counts her blessings to have a happy and healthy daughter, is planning on shaving her head if she can raise $1000 for the IWK.

Some people would be beautiful even if they were bald. MO))) knows one of those people: Barb McFarlane.

Barb says:

Hey friends...I'm looking for your support to raise $1000 for children's cancer research. In exchange for you donations I will shave my head bald at the "BRAVE THE SHAVE" event in Moncton on May 8th. That's right BALD! All funds raised will go to our local sick childrens hospital, the IWK.

Why am I willing to shave my head for such a cause? No, I don't have a sick child - but why only react in the face of adversity? During my worst personal catastrophes, a somber comforting thought was always "at least Catherine is healthy"....but many parents live an alternate world. And I just can't imagine anything worse than having a sick child. So I'm shaving my head not because I have a sick child but because so many other parents do and while thier energy is being spent running from doctor to doctor and just trying to keep life together...this is the least I can do to try and help.

So dig deep...I've submitted a goal of $1000 and thats not a lot for a bunch of generous Miramichiers!

We asked Barb what she plans on doing without hair?

"I plan on rocking the bald look! But I may take the opportunity to play with a wig, perhaps have long flowing hair for once lol...but it would be occasional and I won't be hiding behind it. No I'm not apprehensive about it, this is not an impulsive decision, I feel solid about it and look forward to it actually, talk about a fresh start! "

What about your daughter? What does she think about you having your head shaved?

" My daughter is an old soul, wise beyond her years but it still filled my heart to tearing up when I asked what she would think of me having no hair, after I told her why, and she said "Mom, I'd be proud of you". She amazes me everyday."

Barb says she is pleased that her hairdresser and friend of 8 years is going to be there to shave her head.

"My hairdresser, Celine Colford, also just confirmed that SHE will be joining me and the event to do my 'shave'!!!! So excited about that too. She's been my hairdresser and confident for years - it means a lot to me that she'll be with me."
