VIDEO: Shannex bid chosen for nursing home

Minister Harris reveals Shannex is the successful bidder for the new 240 bed nursing home facilities. Harris answers questions about care and jobs.

Shannex is the company that already operates several P3 (public private partnership) nursing homes in the province.  Lisa Harris, Minister of the Elderly and Long Term Care made the announcement today that Shannex won the bid for the new facility in Miramichi and it will be built in Chatham Head across from the hospital and will also have part of the facility in Douglastown across from Kents.

There were three bidders vying for the contract to replace the Miramichi Senior Citizens home and the Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home.

Harris said it will be a state of the art facility and will provide the best care for seniors.  She also said that labour agreements that were place at the time of the RFP will also be honoured.  She was asked about staffing by a CBC reporter who referenced a problem with a new nursing home Edmundston that seemed to be understaffed.

Harris said she expects a future news conference when Shannex will attend and explain in detail their plans.  She did confirm, however, that programs that are in place the current nursing homes (like adult daycare and Meals on Wheels), will continue under the new owners.

See the video below for Harris’s announcement, and her answers to the media questions.
