2017 Tall Ships event will run July 7 to 9. September 2016 will see a 170 foot Spanish galleon visit Miramichi for one night.
El Galeon is coming to Miramichi in September. The 170 foot vessel is making its way to the Great Lakes at that time, and will make a one night stop in Miramichi, mid-week in late September. The ship is 121 feet tall, and can pass under the Centennial Bridge (154 feet), but the location where the ship will be docked has not yet been determined.
The visit will serve as a reminder of the upcoming tall Ships Festival that will happen in Miramichi in July of 2017.
About El Galeon
El Galeon Andalucia (referred to as in Spain) is a 170 foot, 495 ton, authentic wooden replica of a galleon that was part of Spain’s West Indies fleet. With information about 16th century European sailing techniques and technology, as well as important Florida history exhibits, El Galeón will tell the 500 year story since the arrival of Juan Ponce de León on the eastern shore of Florida. St. Augustine has been named El Galeón's home American port for the foreseeable future.
The 2017 festival will take place after Rendez Vous 2017, a large tall ships event taking place in Quebec City, commemorating Canada's 150 birthday.
Miramichi will play host to 1 large Class A ship, and 7 smaller ships. Initially it was thought Miramichi would get to woo the ships they wanted, but Rendez Vous organizers will now dictate what ships go to what city. Summerside and Caraquet are also looking to host ships at that time.
The Miramichi Festival will run from July 7 to 9, and Miramichi will be the first stop for ships after the Canada Day event in Quebec.
Other questions about what the festival feature will be answered after a committee is formed and budget is allocated to the event.
