Solid pitching and timely hitting keys to Miramichi victory
The host Miramichi Pee Wee AAA Cardinals got off to a great start at the annual Ken MacDonald Memorial Kinsmen Baseball Tourney by defeating their cross river rival, the Chatham Ironmen 5-1 on Friday morning.
Zach Nemwan paced the Cardinal attack at the plate by going 2-3 with a Home Run and 3 RBI's. Jonathan Russell, Alex Doucet, Max Martin, A.J. Adams, and Evan Savoy all chipped in with singles.
The game was a close affair featuring several nice plays by both teams. With the Cards leading 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 6th, Newman gave Miramichi some breathing room by launching a 2 run blast to straight away centerfield to make it 5-1, which would be the final.
On the mound, Alex Doucet, Jonathan Martin, Max Martin, and Cole Trepanier combined on a 2 hitter while striking out 13 Ironmen batters.
In action Friday evening, the Cardinals were back on the field to face the Halifax Braves. Due to an unbalanced schedule with 7 teams, it was pre-determined that the result from this game along with offensive and defensive runs would not count against Miramichi, who were already scheduled to play three games in the preliminary round of the tournament.
In any event, the Cards got on the board early and once again it was Newman leading the way with his 2nd two-run homer of the day putting the Cards out front 2-0. Halifax wasted little time getting those runs back and more as they scored six times in their half of the 1st to make it 6-2. The Braves proceeded to add three more in the 2nd and pulled ahead 9-2. Yet once again the Cards proved they don't go away quietly as they touched up Braves pitchers for four runs in the 4th to close the gap to 9-6. However, that is as close as the Cards would get as Halifax tacked on another seven runs to make the final 16-6. In addition to Newman's Home Run, he also added a single to go 2-2 in this one, with a pair of RBI's and two runs scored. Other Cardinal hits in this game came from Jonathan Russell, Trey Dunnett, Max Martin, and Jonathan Martin.
Sharing in mound duties against a tough hitting Halifax squad were Jonathan Henderson, Ben Forrest, A.J. Adams, and Trey Dunnett.
The Cardinals are back in action with 2 games on Saturday. First is a matchup vs. Moncton Cubs at 12:30pm, followed by a 5:30pm game against Riverview
