NB Power is advising its customers to contact the RCMP if they are called or approached by anyone suspicious. (CBC)
NB Power is warning its customers of several scams across the province.
Someone has been calling customers, claiming to be selling products or services that will save them money, Melissa Morton, manager of media relations stated in a news release.
The caller may refer to it as a "green initiative," she said.
NB Power has also received reports that someone has been visiting people's homes in an unmarked vehicle demanding payment to avoid disconnection, said Morton.
But when NB Power contacts customers regarding the payment of accounts, credit card or banking information is not requested, she stressed.
Any payments to NB Power should only be made at authorized NB Power payment locations, online via the NB Power website, or at the customer’s financial institution, said Morton.
Another scam involves an individual showing up, claiming to be a water heater contractor.
NB Power does not initiate service calls or water heater repair, said Morton. Such appointments are always initiated by customers, she said. And the cost for water heater servicing is included in the rental fee on their monthly power bill.
This is not the first time NB Power has warned of a payment scam. A similar warning was issued in September.
The utility recommends its customers contact the RCMP if they are called or approached by people they suspect of fraud.
