MIRAMICHI - It’s a big weekend for the Newcastle Cardinals. The red birds have a three game home stand beginning Friday night against the Chatham Head Tigers (2-5) and a Sunday double-header against the undefeated Grand Fall Cataracts (9-0).
Friday the Tigers cross the river to Cardinal Field for the second meeting of the 2012 Miramichi Valley Baseball League season between the inner-city rivals. In their first clash June 1, the young, upstart Tigers gave the defending league and provincial champions a run for their money early before the Cards pulled out an 8-5 win.
Friday’s game is just Newcastle’s fifth of the season. Weather has played havoc with the Cardinals’ schedule wiping out a road game against the Tigers and a road double header against the Caraquet Acadiens (0-4).
On Sunday the Cataracts make their way down the 108 to Miramichi for the first meeting between the two teams since the league final last season. The Cardinals downed the Cataracts in the final and went on to win the provincial title.
This season the Cataracts have been absolutely perfect playing a league leading nine games and winning them all.
The first game of Sunday’s double header starts at 2 p.m.
