CRUX Miramichi 2011
A cold and windy November 20th saw thirty CycloCross racers converge on England’s Hollow in Miramichi. The race started at 11am and was over by noon.
The format of the race was a 2.3Km winding loop on the grass, gravel and mud and all CycloCross races in new Brunswick follow a “forty five minutes plus one lap”.
This years slightly longer course was tough, constant stops and starts with tight uphill turns and barricades to jump after rapid dismounts. There was some rain about twenty minutes into the race that came and went for the remainder. If you were racing you barely noticed it but the spectators didn’t like getting wet.
We had entrants from Saint John, Greater Moncton, Bathurst and Fredericton. Only two women participated, both from the Moncton area.
As far as local entrants we had myself (Team Incline Sports), Brad Veysey (Team Incline Sports), Paul Hill, Devin Doiron of Rogersville (Team Incline Sports) , Darren Simmie and John Harrigan.
There were five Categories, A (Expert), B (Elite), W (women), C (Sport) and D for unlicensed racers and racers using a mountain bike.
Devin Doiron (Team Incline Sports) placed third in B Category with 6 laps 54:50
Brad Veysey (Team Incline Sports) placed first in C Category with 5 laps 52:52
Scott Campbell (Team Incline Sports) placed second in C category 5 laps 57:12
Miramichi was the last stop of an eight race series, Devin Doiron (Team Incline Sports) did all eight races while I missed one because of the Flu, Devin finished the year in third overall in B Category and I finished second overall in C. Devin is only sixteen years old and this is his first year racing bicycles. He started with a road bike and got to do a very prestigious Stage Race in Rimouski for Junior racers. He also went to Track Nationals and later in the year started mountain biking and participated in the local 4 Hours of French Fort Cove. We got behind him and got him into CycloCross and made sure he got to all the events. I think with experience and training Devin will get to represent not only Incline Sports but also the Province of New Brunswick and maybe even Canada!
D/Mtn Bike category
3. Darren Simmie 5 laps 58:43
4. Paul Hill 5 laps 59:41
5. John Harrigan 4 laps 52:02
All in all a fantastic day and a good turnout, doubling last year! CycloCross in NB has certainly been gaining a lot of new interest and this year we saw a lot of racers getting appropriate CX bikes.
