Middle Island: Rescue crews called to aid capsized fishermen (photos)

Shortly after 9pm this evening, rescue crews were called to Water Street just east of Middle Island to assist two boaters that had capsized. As night was falling, the city's boat used by the fire and police department sailed up along side the two men and offered assistance. The men were about 300 yards from the shore, but were still in only three feet of water. They declined any help, and dragged the overturned boat to shore near Bremner Drive where police and fire crews were waiting, and where about 20 cars lined the street watching the spectacle and swatting mosquitos.

This area of the river has seen many fishermen since the bass season opened, and even more with the anticipated Miramichi Striper Cup to tke place this weekend.

Miramichi Police remarked that they had not seen so much traffic on Water Street since the last time they held a festival on Middle Island.

When the men finally got to shore, four firemen helped tham get the boat turned right-side-up.

Woman creeped out. Hogan arrested and released.
