Softball action in the Miramichi Men’s Fastpitch League kicked off this week as the Miramichi ‘Towne Ford’ Rangers sought to avenge their only loss this season against the Eel Ground Eagles. Pitcher Greg Sullivan notched eight strikeouts while hitting a home run and 2 singles at the plate, Cory Cooper added 3 doubles in aid of the Ranger cause. Not to be denied, Eagles’ hurler Chris McKay gained five strikeouts himself, with strong offensive offerings from Dustin Stewart, with a home run and a single, and Kortney McAllister, who got along with a double and single. With a score of 9-6, the Rangers took the win, but could take nothing away from the spirited effort of the Eel Ground club.
With rain cancelling Tuesday’s night’s game it was a shortened schedule this week. It could have been shorter still as the heavens threatened the game between the Nelson ‘Days Inn’ Red Sox and Miramichi ‘Jungle Jim’ Brewers on Wednesday. As it was, the teams managed to squeeze six full innings between showers, which, under league sanctions, means the game was complete. The Sox got themselves a 9-3 victory, with Dan Goodin leading on the mound with seven strikeouts and at the plate with 3 RBI. Ashley Cosgrove took the loss for the Brewers, gaining three strikeouts in the effort. Matthew Hovey put one over the fence for the Brewers, but it was not enough on this night.
So there you have it, the Red Sox continue to chase the Rangers for the League’s top spot but it seems, for the moment at least, that the Miramichi club is still one step ahead of the Nelson crew.
