Mayor Gerry Cormier was loved and respected. His funeral is planned for Friday, June 24th at 1 pm at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church at 360 Newcvastle Blvd.
The guest list for the funeral will be finalized tomorrow morning, and Peggy Doyle, Executive Assistant to the City Manager, says funeral director Roy Walsh of Bell's Funeral Home will be coordinating the event with help from Chief of Police, Paul Fiander.
Doyle says Premier Brian Gallant and Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick Jocelyne Roy-Vienneau are expected to confirm their attendance late today. Walsh says he is preparing for groups of people representing the Police and Fire Services, two branches of the Knights of Columbus, city employees, MLAs, other mayors from municipalities from across the province, and colleagues from Cormier's former employer the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour.
Cormier's eulogy will be delivered by his son Jason of Birch Hill, PEI. Cormier is also survived by 6 brothers, and Doyle is expecting 2 or more of them to speak at their brother's funeral.
Doyle, who worked beside Cormier for his entire tenure as Mayor, will deliver remarks on behalf of the City of Miramichi.
Cormier's family has agreed to record a video of the service. Tthe video will be available at www.MiramichiOnline.com Friday at 5pm.
Mayor Gerald "Gerry" Cormier died at the age of 66 on June 19th after a heart attack. Cormier, a cancer survivor, was just beginning his 3 tenure as Mayor, after serving on City Council for several terms.
