Taxpayers are not pleased with news that the province is on the hook for $11 million for the failed Umoe Solar deal. But for the people of Miramichi, it's one more disappointment of jobs promised with no payoff. The community has seen its share of tough times with repeated mill closures and businesses moving out. The failed deal cost Miramichi 350 desperately-needed jobs. The bad news was greeted with criticism and even some grim chuckles downtown.
Mayor Gerry Cormier is still holding out hope for something better. "We're used to disappointment on the Miramichi as you know, but it's another blow for us here. But we'll survive and move on," said Cormier. Cormier also said that he understands risks are necessary to create employment, and hopes the next time the province decides to take a risk, his city will have jobs to show for it.
