Mayor Gerry Cormier dead at 66

Flags at half mast, and a book of condolences to sign at City Hall in memory of a popular Mayor and ambassador for Miramichi

City Hall is a somber place today.  Yesterday Gerry Cormier died at the age of 66 after being transported to the Saint John Hospital to undergo a bypass after suffering a heart attack.

Flags are at half mast today, and there is a book of condolences at City Hall that people can sign.  Funeral arrangements are being taken care of Bells Funeral Home, though no details are yet available.

Cormier was a popular Mayor.  He won his third term by a wide margin in the May election after battling cancer for the past two years.  He was an unapologetic cheerleader for the City.  He was accessible, friendly, dedicated, fair and humble.  He was always on point, and seemed to be the voice of reason on many controversial issues, a voice that could bring people together.

Cormier loved music.  He loved to sing, and his Christmas concert was always a big hit.  He was also a big supporter of Sistema.

His fellow councillors (past and present) have expressed their grief:

Tara Ross-Robinson:  Such sadness has befallen our great city. Mayor Cormier was a true gentleman. He had great success in leading the city out of dark times with continued vision for growth and hope for a sunny future. He was inspirational. My heartfelt condolences to his wife Jackie and their children & grandchildren.May you rest well in peace Your Worship.

Peggy McLean:  My family and I are saddened to hear of the passing of Mayor Gerry Cormier, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Jackie and their family. He was a passionate ambassador for our city and the entire region. His smile and positive energy will be greatly missed.

Bill Fleiger:  I lost more than just a mayor, I lost a personal friend. I've known Gerry for a long, long, long time before I even was on council.  I thought the world of Gerry, he was a good face for the Miramichi, he was very pleasant, he treated everyone the same.

Tom King:  Gerry Cormier had a passion for Miramichi like none before him. He was undoubtedly the best spokesperson this city has ever seen. Thank you for your service and rest in peace Mr Mayor. Miramichi is a better place because of you.

Adam Lordon:  Gerry Cormier was a great man and a great mayor. He was the right man for the job and led our city through some tough times. He united the council and the entire city in a way no one else had done before. He was a kind, positive man who was an advocate and a cheerleader for this city, and everyone in it. From the first time I met him he had an uncanny ability to make you smile, feel good, and be happy that this was our community and he was our mayor. It has been a pleasure to know him, and to serve with him. He will be missed greatly.  My condolences to his wife Jackie, his children, and his entire family.
