From the Office of Tilly O’Neill Gordon
Lobster fishing is set to commence on Wednesday the 7th of May at 6 o’clock in the morning for area 23 in Northern and Northeastern New Brunswick. “I am thrilled that the fishermen will be able to start tomorrow morning and I wish them all the best throughout the season” said MP Tilly O’Neill Gordon.
Determinations with respect to fishery openings are subject to weather conditions and to the operational requirements of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The 2014 season will not be extended beyond the 30th of June to avoid the lobsters’ moulting period.
Dredging began today at McEachern’s Point to open a temporary channel. The work began as soon as weather conditions permitted. The contractor has indicated that it may take approximately four days to complete the work; however, it is important to note that the time estimation is dependent on weather and marine conditions. Dredging work to open up the main channel will take longer. An assessment of water depths in various gullies was conducted through a sounding survey by Public Works and Government Services Canada in order to determine where dredging is needed.
Due to ice accumulations and weather conditions this winter and spring, there may be some delays in the placement of navigational aids such as buoys. Water depth in some areas is also limited. Therefore fishermen are reminded to exercise extra care when navigating certain areas of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.
