Title: Interpretative Associate 2014

Friends of Beaubears Island Inc. was incorporated in 1999 as a not-for-profit entity with the mandate to preserve, promote and interpret two federal government national historic site designations associated with Beaubears Island and Wilsons Point: Beaubears Island National Shipbuilding and Boisehébert National Historic Sites. Friends of Beaubears (FOB) operate an interpretive centre and tours of Beaubears Island. FOB has numerous artifacts of its own and others on loan from the Province of NB. FOB has a number of significant projects underway involving partnerships with Parks Canada, the Mormon Historic Foundation, Heritage New Brunswick, the Scottish Heritage Association, and Canoe/Kayak New Brunswick.

Project & Job Objectives:

The objective of this position is to facilitate the interpretation and educational experience of visitors to the Beaubears Island Interpretive Centre and to Beaubears Island and Wilsons Point so that visitors better understand and appreciate its rich cultural heritage. Presentations include character guided tours of Beaubears Island & Wilsons Point.

Description of Tasks:

Under the overall supervision of the Interpretive Centre Executive Director and/or Programming Coordinator, the incumbent will undertake the following specific tasks:

1. Greet and guide visitors

2. Participate in the Island’s Historic tours & re-enactments as a guide or historical character

3. Assist with marketing of the Interpretive Centre and activities to increase awareness

4. Assist with the development and implementation of summer 2014 events and activities

5. Assist with the commemorative and experiential interpretative activity for the Voyageur Canoe program

6. Undertake research as may be required and any other duties deemed necessary

Coordinating between Executive Director, Programming Coordinator and summer staff

Acting as receptionist: greeting visitors, booking tours, handling money

Collecting data and reporting on visitor numbers, tour numbers, etc

Miscellaneous duties as required including guiding visitors through the Interpretive Centre, customizing visitor experiences, planning and advertising events

Skills and experience:

Able to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment with little instruction

Comfortable delegating tasks to others

Dedication to customer service

Close attention to detail and high level of organization

Experience planning and advertising events

Experience with Microsoft Office and social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube

Experience in local tourism or passion for history not required, but encouraged

Coordinate summer students and volunteers for the island`s tour program, as well as for subsequent special events.

Coordinate training of employees and volunteers

Planning and execution of the “Symphony at Sunset” weekly musical program

Supervise the design and fabrication of travelling exhibits

Promote FOB programing through the creation of press releases

Skills and experience:

Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment

Self-motivation

Creativity

Aptitude in Supervision

Experience with theatrical direction/scriptwriting

Experience planning and executing tourism-related events

Passion for local history strongly encouraged
