Aron Merrill joined the Chatham Ironmen in the summer of 1990 after a successful career playing for the University of Vermont. This was the second year of the revitalized Ironmen Baseball program and he was a key component of making the Ironmen a serious contender again in the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League after several year absences in the mid-80’s. Being an avid outdoorsman and angler, the Miramichi was a perfect fit for Aron and spent much of his free time taking advantage of what our river has to offer and making many friends while doing it.
Aron returned again in 1991 and 1992 and quickly became the league’s most dominating left-handed pitcher, leading the league in both wins and strikeouts during those two seasons and finished with a career 16-6 record, 178 strikeouts and a 2.38 ERA. His work ethic and winning attitude rubbed off on many and helped the Ironmen back to the top of the league standings and a berth in the League finals in 1992.
Mike “Spider” Wood was a shutdown relief pitcher who toiled for the Ironmen during the seventies. Before the term “closer” came into vogue, Spider saved countless games for an Ironmen team that notched five straight provincial titles. He used pinpoint control and a tantalizing array of off-speed pitches to stymie opposing hitters. He was 6th in all-time Ironmen strikeouts with 274 and 5th in winning percentage .677. A consummate team player, Mike is a welcome addition to the Chatham Ironmen Honour Roll.
