Just before 5pm today, a sudden fire only took minutes to totally destroy a small garage on the property of 59 Henderson Street in Chatham. Fire crews arrived quickly, but the small building was already engulfed, and bystanders could hear small explosions. Some said the building had been used as a workshop or for car repairs by the people who were living at the house. Thick black smoke could be seen from across the river, and may people travelling across the bridge drove in the vicinity of the church looking for the source of the smoke. The house next to the garage was damaged by flames - the siding melted, and was running down the side of the building like paint. as people were leaving, the fire crew was entering the house to check for dmage or flames, and firemen were chopping into the side of the house to see if any fires had started within the walls. The people living in the house could be seen sitting on the curb crying into their hands.
