Downtowns Xmas Turkey Drive Kicks Off

For the 12th consecutive year, Miramichi Downtowns are having a turkey drive that will help feed some of the city's less fortunate at Christmas time. The goal is up this year by over 20 turkeys, but Miramichiers generosity will come through as always. Last year they were short over 80 turkeys on the last day for the drive, but frozen turkeys came flying in and they surpassed their quota and the freezers were full.

PRESS RELEASE

197 turkeys is the goal for 2013’s Christmas Turkey Drive, this is an increase from last year by 34 turkeys.

The 12th Miramichi turkey collection will be done by Mary Richardson. It has been identified through the coordinators of the Christmas Hampers a requirement of 197 turkeys is needed for 2013 holiday dinner. Richardson owns The Tiny Treasure Chest which is located beside the Great Canadian Dollar Store. Mary Richardson is pleased to be the coordinator for the turkey drive, for the second year. Richardson states, “It is a great opportunity for her to give back to the community. Last year was my first year of involvement and appreciated the guidance provided by the 10 years of experience offered by Mavis Williamson; I know she is still involved behind the scenes.” Last year we thought we may not make the numbers and in the last day, we were successful in acquiring the 176 turkeys, the requirement was 163. No turkey is wasted and extras are distributed within the community to various organizations. It all goes back into our local community.” Richardson hopes, we will be this successful again as the many coordinators of the Christmas hampers appreciate the kindness of people helping people.

Frozen turkeys can be dropped off at two locations. The drops off locations are Tiny Treasure Chest, 1750 Water Street or the Great Canadian Dollar Store, 1746 Water Street. Mark Kane of the Great Canadian Dollar store states “ I am pleased be part of this incentive to help out the Christmas Hampers, and we will pleased to accept frozen turkeys for Christmas Dinners.”

If a person is unable to physically drop off a frozen turkey, they can forward a donation made out the “Christmas Turkey Drive”.
