Middle School Softball Champs crowned
Monday and Tuesday were both beautiful nights to be at the ballfield as the District 16 Middle School Softball League held its year end Jamborees to celebrate another successful season. The girls and boys leagues, in their fourth year as projects of the Nelson Softball Association, saw a total of seven teams representing four schools play during May and June. This week they finished the year with a semi-final and final based on league standings. After the first game, players were treated to Pizza Delight, draws for pizza and movie pass prizes before the final two teams battled for a chance to win a Championship banner to take back and hang at their school.
On Monday night the girls hit the field with Nelson Raiders facing Harkins Blues in the semi-final matchup. The two teams had split their two previous meetings this season and were fighting for a chance to meet the Dr. Losier Knights who had earned a bye to the Final by going undefeated in the regular season.
Harkins looked to be on their way to the championship game but a late inning surge by the Raiders gave them their first lead of the game and the defense held tight in the final inning to secure the 9-7 victory for Nelson. In the final, Nelson continued their good play and challenged a Dr. Losier team who had defeated Nelson in both their two previous meetings in the regular season. The Raiders played the favored Knights tight but they would prevail as Dr. Losier would earn their second consecutive girls Softball crown.
On Tuesday it was the boys turn to shine with Dr. Losier taking on Harkins in the semi-final. It was a back and forth game throughout with several lead changes but in the end Harkins would prevail 12-10. Harkins moved onto the final to face Nelson who earned a bye by going undefeated in the regular season and Nelson continued their strong season finishing with an 15-2 victory over the Blues to secure their fourth title in as many years.
The Nelson Softball Association would like to congratulate all the teams on a tremendous season as well as thank coaches, parents and volunteers who help make this league possible and provide an opportunity for youth to experience everything the game of Softball has to offer. Also, thank you to Pizza Delight Newcastle for their continued support. Anyone interested in any information about the league or how to get involved please contact Blake Lynch at 625-4629.
