Last night was the grand re-opening of Brookdale Flower Shop at their new location on the King George Highway (across from the civic center). For years Miramichiers knew it as Brookdale Nurseries. Many of us remember when they sold flowers on the square in Newcastle, and almost every Miramichi has visited the nurseries on the Chapel Island Road.
Leigh Harris took MO))) for a tour of the new shop. The building located at the corner of Radio Street and King George Hwy, used to be clinic, and before that a pizza joint. It had been divided inside into two separate halves, but Leigh said they had to knock down a wall and make room for their cooler and a work area for preparing arrangements.
Harris said the new location has been great. The infrastructure at the old location on the CI Road was costing so much to maintain, that she said she hadn't been able to cash her own paycheck in a while. "That's all changed," she said grinning.
"This business changed a lot when grocery stores starting selling cut flowers," Harris added. She explained that in the new location they get a lot more people coming through the door for all sorts of items including Christmas decorations (that are on display now). They get fresh flower deliveries a few times a week from distributors in Montreal and Sussex, and feel they can compete better with the grocery stores.
There were many people on hand yesterday to congratulate them on their new location, and wish them well.
