The death of Nicolaas “Nick” Johannes Aloysius Haars, husband of Shirley (Somers) Haars of Chatham Head, NB, occurred at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at the age of 93. Born in Culemborg, Holland, Nick was the son of the late Corneleus and Theodora (Kalkhoven) Haars.
Nick was retired from the former Atlantic Wafer Board Mill, was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 10, Newcastle, and received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. Nick was put in a labour camp during WW11, served with the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Peace Keeper. Nick will also be remembered by all his stories about his homeland and his love for his King and Queen of the Netherlands.
Nick is survived by one daughter: Helen-Ward-Wakelin (Craig) of Eel Ground, NB; one son: Ricky Haars of Calgary, AB; two sisters: Helen McCafferty of Lincoln, NB, Jeannie Bell of Newcastle, NB; four grandchildren: Nicholas and Sherri Haars; Olivia and Aeden Wakelin; several nieces and nephews; three step daughters: Ruth MacKnight and June Dickson (Blaine) all of Napan, NB, Mary Berube (Roger) of Green River, NB ; one stepson: Boyce Somers (Patricia) of Black River Bridge, NB; 12 step grandchildren; 22 step great grandchildren and one step great great grandchild.
Nick is predeceased by his first wife Valeda Haars; one sister: Billie Matheson: one brother: Joseph; three brothers-in-law: Frank McCafferty, Doug Matheson and Sterling Bell; one step grandson and his beloved dogs Rockie and Benji.
Visitation will be held at Bell’s Funeral Home on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9.Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, Chatham Head, NB on Monday, February 1, 2016 @ 2 PM with Father Tom Fowler officiating.
Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery later in the spring.
In Nick’s memory a donation may be made to the Miramichi SPCA or Roof that Jack Started. Please note: Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #10, Newcastle, are asked to meet at the Funeral Home on Sunday evening at 6:30 for service at 6:45 PM.
