Fights and threats prompt suspensions and police investigation

Principal expresses disappointment

In a letter home to parents of MVHS students, Principal Shawn Wood expressed concern and disappointment over the occurrence of fights at the school in recent days, online threats, and the sharing of videos of the fights on social media.  He also informed parents that there is an increased police presence at the school and the students have been suspended.

Good afternoon, MVHS Families.

I am reaching out to update you on some serious activity that has been taking place at MVHS before the long weekend. As you may be aware, there were three major fights that took place last week, during the lunch break. School staff and police were on the scene quickly and have been dealing with the incidents since then.

Over the long weekend, there have been many posts and threats shared over social media. We are shocked and disappointed by the level of this violence, and also by the fact that there were bystanders there recording the actions who did not seek help. We take every one of these threats seriously, and police are involved and investigating.

The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We will always take any threats seriously and err on the side of caution. Violence and racism are not acceptable. I can confirm that our school is working with City Police, District staff, and other community officials to address the incidents.

There is an increased police presence at the school, as an added measure of security. The group of students involved in the incidents has been suspended while District staff and police are conducting Violent Threat Risk Assessments. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has also been made aware of the situation.

I assure you that we are all working together to ensure our students and staff feel safe while at school. I will continue to message with any updates, if needed, to keep you informed. Please reach out to the school directly with any questions or concerns you may have.

Thank you,

Shawn Wood.
