Background:
Established in 2006 the Paul Dawson Memorial Bursary was created to
assist St. Thomas students from the Miramichi area who are enrolled in
political science or education. A graduate of St. Thomas (BT’68),
Paul was a well known figure on the Miramichi for many years until his
passing in 2005. He spent many years as an educator, and was a
community leader in the sport of softball on local, provincial and
national levels. He eventually entered the political realm, holding
various positions on the Newcastle and Miramichi City Councils. As an
MLA for the Miramichi Newcastle riding, he held cabinet posts as
Minister of Commerce and Development, and as Minister of Social
Assistance. This is the 6th annual awarding of the bursary
