Miramichi Sports: T-Wolves Win Streak at Five, Point Streak at Six

MIRAMICHI - The Miramichi Timberwolves just keep on winning. The Maritime Junior Hockey League team scored their fifth straight game Saturday night beating the Metro Shipbuilders 5-2 in front of 923 fans the Miramichi Civic Centre.

Unlike Tuesday night when the teams met in Dartmouth, there was no need for a third period come back. The T-Wolves lead 3-0 after the first period and never looked back.

Tyler Brown opened the scoring at 3:37 to give the T-Wolves a 1-0 lead. Cole MacDonald then got on the game sheet at 4:48 before Rankyn Campbell scored at 7:56.

Shots in the first favoured Miramichi 15-5. But in the second the T-Wolves backed off and allowed Metro a glimmer of hope and a goal courtesy of JP Harvey at 17:37.

The lack of focus in the middle fram didn't go unnoticed by head coach Rob MacDonald.

“We addressed that and I mean at the end of the day you know we're getting three guys caught deep, we had defence pinching when they shouldn't be,” he said.

In the third the T-Wolves added two more goals from Alex Scully at 3:44 and Ross Martin at 15:07, before Metro added a second goal on the power play from Brandon Boutilier to make it a 5-2 final.

Jordan Kennedy earned another win between the pipes for Miramichi stopping 28 shots will Jeff Arkin stopped 27 shots and picked up the loss.

With the win Miramichi remains third in the Meek Division with a 10-6-1-0, just two points behind the second place Woodstock Slammers. Despite the team's great run, MacDonald was a typical coach and kept a lid on the enthusiasm.

“Our motto this year is don't get too high on the highs and don't get too low on the lows and we're grateful and appreciative of where we are right now and we're a pretty happy group but we're only as good as our last game and we have a big game going into Pictou this week and we're focused on that,” he said.

The T-Wolves do travel to New Glasgow this Thursday to take on the Pictou County Weeks Crushers before returning home Saturday night to face the Campbellton Tigers.

And while MacDonald isn't about to get to high on the team's current six game point streak, he is happy with the way everyone is contributing.

“We like our depth. We still have a few holes that we'd like to address and hopeful we will before the Christmas trade deadline, but for a young group they are working hard, that's where it all starts, and they're gelling and we're getting results,” he said.
